Cooktown is the gateway into the wilderness of Far North Queensland. Cooktown was founded in 1873 as the port for the Palmer River Goldfields. The founding of Cooktown occurred over a century after Captain James Cook spent 48 days in 1770 on the banks of the Endeavour River repairing his damaged ship. Cooktown in Far North Queensland is filled with a rich history and is surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Cooktown is very proud of its history, and each year celebrates Cooktown as Australia's first European settlement. Locals become very involved, and put together a vivid a re-enactment of Captain Cook's arrival.
Visitors may also like to meander through the James Cook museum. The Museum documents Cook's voyages, Aboriginal and natural history, and the gold rush days.
